City driving looks chaotic, but safe city drivers all do the same five quiet things. None of them require talent — just repetition until they feel boring.
1. Scan twelve seconds ahead
Beginners stare at the bumper in front. Safe drivers look twelve seconds down the road — brake lights three cars up, a delivery van edging out, a ball rolling toward the curb. Early vision buys gentle braking instead of panic stops.
2. Hold a three-second gap
Pick a shadow or sign the car ahead passes, then count. Under three seconds in the dry — or six in the rain — and you are tailgating, whatever it feels like. Gaps are free insurance.
3. Cover the brake at intersections
Every green light is a stale green light. Sliding your foot over the brake as you enter an intersection cuts a full second off your reaction when someone runs the red.
4. Talk through hazards
Commentary driving — saying "cyclist right, bus pulling out, pedestrian looking at phone" out loud — is the fastest way we know to force your eyes to keep moving. It feels silly for a week, then it saves you.
5. Park like you'll leave in a hurry
Reverse into bays and driveways whenever you can. Leaving nose-first gives you full vision of traffic and pedestrians when it matters most — during the rushed exit.
These are exactly the routines drilled in our Defensive Driving Program — six sessions that turn conscious effort into reflex.
